Sagamore Spirit Distillery, Baltimore

Located in Baltimore, Sagamore Spirit Distillery offers you a chance to see how rye whiskey is made. At one time rye whiskey was to Maryland what bourbon is to Kentucky. When Prohibition passed in 1919, Maryland ratified the amendment, but then protected it's rye industry by refusing to pass laws to enforce it! However, when the United States entered the Second World War, the rye whisky distilleries converted their operations to produce ethanol for fuel. American tastes shifted to other drinks, and rye all but disappeared.

Today Sagamore Spirit Distillery is trying to bring Maryland's rye whiskey tradition back. Visitors can tour a fully operational distillery, learn about the production process, and even dip your finger into a fermentation vat of mash to see what it tastes like! Each tour concludes in a sampling room where you can try the different proofs of whiskey and specialty drinks such as the Cognac Finish. There is a gift shop which sells bottles of their various whiskies. And if you are hungry, a nice restaurant called the Rye Tavern is on the grounds. {I especially like the pulled beef sandwich.} Tickets are currently 15 dollars a person. Sagamore is very easy to drive to and has free parking.
